Top 4 Horror Movies of 2016

 

In 2016, many new horror movies were released and as we all get into the Halloween spirit some of us might enjoy watching some of the most scary horror movies of the year. If you are one of those brave few, try watching these top 5 horror movies.

Don’t Breathe is a horror film which shook the movie industry this year. Just the name and picture of the movie alone are enough to send chills down your spine. The film was directed by Fede Alvarez and runs for 1 hour and 28 minutes. The New York Times said, “It will probably please fans of this simple genre with its solid suspense, murky lighting and “gotcha!” scares.” To provide a quick synopsis of the film: Rocky, Money, and Alex are 3 Detroit robbers who made their money by stealing from many wealthy, rich people. Money hears of veteran who has a lot of money from a settlement and convinces the gang to try robbing this “easy” target. However, when they get into his house, the trio can’t find and exit and have to fight for their lives to get out.

One of the most anticipated horror movies of this year was The Conjuring 2 which is a sequel to The Conjuring. James Wan is the director of this movie which runs for 2 hours and 14 minutes. According to the New York Times, “The Conjuring 2 does everything you want a sequel to do. It’s as well made as the original, but the location and the story are different enough that it’s not the same thing all over again.” IMDb rates the movie a 7.8/10 because of its innovation in plot and the frightening aspect of the movie. The film starts out as Lorraine and Ed Warren travel to north London to help a single mother who is raising 4 children alone in a house, haunted by a malicious spirit. Following along Lorraine and Ed is a guaranteed nightmare inducing experience.

Lights Out is a supernatural horror film directed by David Sandberg and it runs for 1 hour and 21 minutes. According to the Washington Post, “In a brisk 81 minutes, Sandberg spins this shivery campfire yarn with such skill and verve that the only thing that matters is making it to the final “boo.” This movie is sure to scare your pants off. Although it has the light rating of PG-13, the crafty ways the director changes the story keeps the viewer engaged the entire time. The movie follows the story of Rebecca who left home, thinking that her childhood fears were behind her. One of these fears was what happens when the lights went out at night. This thought holds a significance to their mother and a supernatural being seeks vengeance on the entire family.

One of the scariest movies this year was The Purge: Election Year. This movie was released on July 1, 2016, and was instantly a huge hit. The Purge: Election Year is a sequel to The Purge: Anarchy which released back in 2014 and is the new edition to The Purge series. This specific movie was directed by James DeMonaco. The movie is about a former police sergeant becomes head of security to protect a presidential candidate who is being targeted for death on Purge night due to the president’s vow to eliminate the purge. This movie runs for one hour and 49 minutes and will keep you on the edge of your seat at all times. IMDb rates this a 6.1/10 because of the similarity of ideas between previous Purge movies; however, many say that it sends you “serious” chills and is very worth watching.
